Stucco and plaster jobs in progress #191

Original faux tile had layers of paint. There were holes in the wall to patch from replacing galvanized plumbing.

Here's what I had to say about faux tiles:

Floor was concrete between the joists with a 3/4" mud base, that is cement mortar. Galvanized plumbing was replaced.

We painted the old tiles with plaster weld and put on a veneer plaster basecoat.

Finish plaster is scored to look like tile. This plaster is water resistant and scrubable.

Just like 1920 again. Note the original medicine cabinet. The cabinet on the left housed original knob and tube wiring.

We plastered a new mud base floor. This floor is dead straight.

We made a special tool to run the plaster base. We put new ceramic tile and ran the base to look like original.

Bathroom looks just like it did in 1920. Even the ceramic floor tile is an exact match.

We were called in for an emergency plaster repair. A chunk of the ceiling fell off in the ballroom. Galvanized plumbing is a time bomb.

Finished patch in this very historic ballroom.

My dog, Huck, had a very relaxing stay at the Shoreham.

The reason the stucco failed is the lath was nailed to celotex, a paper insulation board.

We nailed the new lath to the studs using 2" nails. The tudor boards were taped off and covered up to avoid scratching up the paint. We even left the old flashing which was well done.

The finish is REAL white portland with REAL white sand. The stark bright white color was toned down with Sherwin Williams color, pure white.

Tudor stucco has been popular for centuries. The dark brown trim boards and off white stucco create an interesting color composite.

Pebble dash stucco was replaced on this deserving old house.

Just like 1921 again.

A color stucco house we did in 2009 had a new Spanish tile roof. We cut the stucco, put on new flashing, and used a decorative band to hide the patch.
