Colorful Re-stucco in Petworth
Washington, DC
1913 townhouse gets a re-stucco:
Most of the stucco easily came off the old salmon bricks. Arches over windows and doors were badly deteriorated.
Arches are formed with masonite and filled.
When there is nothing to nail to, wood strips to form window returns are wedged with
lumber.
Windows are protected from damage with styrofoam. One good use for styrofoam.
112 year old parapet never had any coping on the top to prevent leaking.
Top of parapet wall was cracked up and badly deteriorated. We see chimneys like this.
People wonder why they leak.
There was no flashing on the back of the parapet. Somebody in a big hurry stuck some rubber tape
stuff on and left it.
We put rubber peel and stick membrane on the top of the parapet.
We put a metal coping over the membrane. No way this can leak.
Note the metal flashing at the base of the parapet. We put a finish on the back of the parapet
even though you can't see it from the ground.
The band on the parapet, the ring around the window and other details were finished with white portland cement and white sand.
We re-did the flashing over the porch roof.
There you have it, sports fans. Or should I say, stucco fans.
