                                    updated December 3, 2000
the coolest thing we did this month is
the dome
Cathedral Heights area
Washington, DC
Click here to see how we did it
Finished dome.  Mynor pushes rotating template around.
The skylight and dome light up
the stairway
Channel iron framing and metal lath.

The second coolest thing was a tour
of David Hytla's
ornamental plaster shop
in Hume, VA
What's so special about this patch?
We do lots of these and never take pictures.
This house belongs to an ornamental plasterer named David Hytla.

More stucco
Jim's house
Tenley Circle area
Washington, DC
Old stucco torn off on gables and dormer. New lath and scratch coat.
We found an area of the old house that had
never been painted to determine how they
made the old pattern in 1930.
It's hard to tell after ump-teen layers of
paint and whitewash.
The brown coat is rubbed with a rubber float to pull the sand up. I used a concrete sand
that was real coarse and teenie rocks
in it. It matched the old stucco exactly.
After the mortar sets, wall is washed down
by dashing water on the wall. This washes
off the cement and exposes the aggregate.
Finished dormer just like 1930.

All for now.
There's always plenty more.
Please keep checking back.
